American Health Care Association
“The American Health Care Association (AHCA) is a
non-profit federation of affiliated state health organizations,
together representing nearly 12,000 non-profit and for-profit
assisted living, nursing facility, developmentally-disabled, and
sub-acute care providers that care for more than 1.5 million
elderly and disabled individuals nationally. AHCA represents the
long-term care community to the nation at large – to government,
business leaders, and the general public. It also serves as a
force for change within the long term care field, providing
information, education, and administrative tools that enhance
quality at every level.”
American Medical
Directors Association
Mission Statement: “The
American Medical Directors Association is the professional
association of medical directors and physicians practicing in
the long term care continuum, dedicated to excellence in patient
care by providing education, advocacy, information, and
professional development.” AMDA is a democratic Association
overseen by a Board of Directors elected by a House of Delegates
(41 state chapters delegates). AMDA became House of Delegates of
the
American Medical Association, and the
American Society of Internal
Medicine in 1992.
Centers for
Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
The Centers for Medicare &
Medicaid Services is a Federal agency within the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services and administers:
- The
Medicare
program, and works in
partnership with the States to administer
Medicaid
.
- The Balanced Budget Act of
1997 created a new children's health insurance program
called the
State Children's Health
Insurance Program (SCHIP). States are permitted to
offer health insurance to uninsured children up to the age
of 19. State guidelines for eligibility and services vary.
- The administrative
simplification standards from Health Insurance Portability
and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and quality standards in
health care facilities through its survey and certification
activity.
- The Clinical Laboratory
Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulates and ensures
quality laboratory testing (excluding research) conducted on
humans in the U.S. All clinical laboratories are required to
obtain proper certification in order to collect Medicare or
Medicaid payments.

System
Program instructions used by CMS
program components, contractors, and State survey agencies to
administer CMS programs. Manuals include day-to-day operating
instructions; policies and procedures based on statutes and
regulations, guidelines, models, and directives. Also a good
source of technical and professional information about the
Medicare and Medicaid programs for other interested parties.
